Using Local Feedback Control to Stabilize Global Behavior in Excitable Media

چکیده
If one end of a one-dimensional excitable medium is forced periodically via impulsive stimuli, the usual response is a periodic wavetrain of propagating pulses. When the forcing period is large, the pulses are uniformly spaced and have identical propagation speed. If the forcing period B becomes critically small, the periodic wavetrain may lose stability via a period-doubling bifurcation that occurs at the stimulus site. In certain contexts (e.g., if the excitable medium is cardiac tissue), it is desirable to stabilize the periodic wavetrain solution by perturbing B, adjusting the timing of the nth stimulus by some small amount ǫn. Previous studies have suggested that if the stimuli are delivered at a single point, then stabilization is possible only in some small radius of the stimulus site. In this article, we explain why controlling global spatiotemporal dynamics via locally applied feedback control (i.e., perturbations to B at the stimulus site) is so difficult. Not only does our analysis reveal why traditional feedback control typically fails, it leads to a constructive algorithm for selecting the perturbations ǫn in such a way that stabilization of the periodic wavetrain can succeed. Control of Spatiotemporal Turbulence in Oscillatory and Excitable Media
Spatiotemporal turbulence or defect-mediated turbulence exists quite generally in excitable and oscillatory media such as chemical turbulence in reaction-diffusion systems and electrical turbulence in cardiac muscle. In many situations spatiotemporal turbulence is very undesirable. For example, ventricular fibrillation, the major reason behind sudden cardiac death, is a turbulent cardiac electr...
متن کاملAdaptive fuzzy pole placement for stabilization of non-linear systems
A new approach for pole placement of nonlinear systems using state feedback and fuzzy system is proposed. We use a new online fuzzy training method to identify and to obtain a fuzzy model for the unknown nonlinear system using only the system input and output. Then, we linearized this identified model at each sampling time to have an approximate linear time varying system. In order to stabilize...

Intricate patterns of wave propagation are exhibited in a chemical reaction-diffusion system with spatiotemporal feedback. Wave behavior is controlled by feedback-regulated excitability gradients that guide propagation in specified directions. Waves interacting with boundaries and with other waves are observed when interaction terms are incorporated into the control algorithm. Spatiotemporal fe...
متن کاملTime-Invariant State Feedback Control Laws for a Special Form of Underactuated Nonlinear Systems Using Linear State Bisection
Linear state bisection is introduced as a new method to find time-invariant state feedback control laws for a special form of underactuated nonlinear systems. The specialty of the systems considered is that every unactuated state should be coupled with at least two directly actuated states. The basic idea is based on bisecting actuated states and using linear combinations with adjustable parame...
